Today's Focus: Developing Emotional Control
First, let's clarify some words that are often interchanged:
Emotions are complex, involving physiological and cognitive responses, and are usually triggered automatically.
Feelings are subjective experiences of emotions. They are how we make sense of these emotions on a conscious level.
Thoughts are mental cognitions—our ideas, opinions, and beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. They may be based on accurate or inaccurate information or rational or irrational reasoning.
Harnessing the Power of Emotion
Our emotions are potent forces. But power, when unchecked, can lead to imbalance.
In simpler terms, rational thinking takes a backseat if we let our emotions run the show.
Test It Out
Recall a moment when you were overwhelmed by emotion—perhaps during an argument or an emotionally charged situation.
Could you think clearly and make measured decisions?
The likely answer is no.
So, how do you harness the energy of your emotions without letting them dominate you?
The answer lies in a concept called willingness.
Willingness means leaning into your emotional experiences to understand their messages better rather than seeking to squash, minimise, or avoid them.
This approach draws you closer to your feelings, enabling more informed decisions about your subsequent actions.
